Aledo, Brock to state

Greg Webb

After several years of leaving tears and the season’s end on the court at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum, the Aledo Ladycats have upgraded their reservations for the 2012 season. Namely, the Class 4A Volleyball State Tournament.

A nail biter on Friday, against Amarillo, proved to be the telling match, as the Ladycats outlasted the Lady Sandies in a 5-game marathon, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-7.

On Saturday, the task proved much easier for Aledo, as they swept the Demonettes of Dumas in three games. Dumas hung around for a while in the opening set, with the score climbing to 11-8 before the Ladycats took control of the game — and the balance of the match.

Aledo prevailed, more dominantly with each game, winning the Region I championship, 25-16, 25-11, 25-9. Brock swept past Quitman on Friday at Rockwall-Heath High School, beating head coach Keith Guyer’s former team, 25-9, 25-10, 25-16. On Saturday, the Lady Eagles took on Commerce.

In a bit of Parker County deja vu, Brock swept the Lady Tigers by nearly the same game counts (in reverse), 25-16, 25-11, 25-9, from the day before. The final game counts matched Aledo’s finals over Dumas.

Springtown, the third county team in regional action over the weekend, ended its Class 3A playoff run Friday, losing in three to Abilene Wylie in the Region I Tournament played in Snyder. Despite the sweep, the Lady Porcupines gave Wylie stiff competition before falling, 18-25, 24-26, 24-26, and finish their stellar season with a 31-4 record.

The Ladycats and Lady Eagles will both play in their respective state semifinal matches on Thursday, at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Opponents and specific start times were not available at press time. Brock will play at either 1 p.m. or 3 p.m., with Aledo at 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. Finals are Saturday.
