— WC’s Darrington commits to UNT
The University of North Texas announced last week it has signed Joh’Vonna Darrington, a 6-foot wing from Weatherford College. Darrington averaged more than 13 points/game and topped eight rebounds/game while helping WC achieve a berth at the NJCAA National Tournament in the 2012-13 season.
At UNT, Darrington will join former WC teammate Hannah Christian, a guard who began her collegiate career at TCU before transferring to Weatherford College, then UNT last year.
Darrington was a first-team All-North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference selection as a freshman, and made a good recovery from off-season knee surgery to earn a second-team NTJCAC nod in her sophomore season.
Brock nabs top seed from Lady Lions
Lady Eagles’ shortstop Shambry Sanders gave Brock an early advantage in the seed match against Ponder on Monday, to see who would fill the District 9-2A winner’s slot in the state playoff brackets. Sanders’ solo inside-the-park home run down the left-field line gave Brock the lead it would never surrender at the Jim Bob Nation diamond complex at Azle High.
Brock southpaw Krysten Marr made her presence felt in the pitcher’s circle and in the batter’s box in the 5-0 victory, striking out eight batters in the 2-hit, complete-game outing while adding two RBIs on as many hits, including a triple. Sanders also added another hit and finished with a pair of runs batted in.
The contest remained close through six innings, with Brock adding three insurance runs in the top half of the seventh frame. Marr quashed a pair of Brock errors in the bottom half, forcing a ground out to finish off the Lady Lions.
