Bearcats alone at top after Granbury romp

ALEDO —Over time, you learn a few things about your profession and Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan is no exception to that rule.

Following his top-ranked Bearcats 72-6 win over previously unbeaten Granbury Friday, the veteran mentor was asked how he planned on preparing for the regular season finale at Trimble Tech Saturday.

“As a coach, there are three things in life you can’t control — the weather, the officiating and how your opponent is going to play,” Buchanan said. “I can tell you we’re going to come out and play hard like we always do and see what happens.”

As it has all season, Aledo came out and took control early, scoring on its first two drives, then saw Ryan Newsome return a punt 54 yards for a third first quarter score.

The visiting Pirates, (5-1 in District 7-4A and 8-1 overall) were forced into three-and-outs on three of their  first four possessions by a suffocating Bearcat defense that allowed just 213 yards and nine first downs on the night.

With the matchup versus a team with an identical record, Buchanan said he was pleased with the way his squad went about its business in practice last week.

“Granbury was coming in here undefeated, so our kids were excited to see a good, quality foe like them,” Buchanan said. “We played fast and tough during the week and again tonight.”

Buchanan was pleased with the way his defensive line came off the ball throughout the night and pushed the Pirates back, praising the work of defensive tackles Ray Hart and Cory Stitle.

“Those two are strong and did a great job tonight,” Buchanan said.

The Bearcat offense rolled up 589 yards of offense, led on the ground by junior running back Jess Anders, who rushed for 142 yards and three first-half scores as part of a ground game amassing 405 steps on just 35 carries.

Quarterback Luke Bishop completed 14 of 17 for 171 yards in the air with touchdown tosses to Quanel Williams and Taco Anderson. Bishop also added a rushing score of his own.

Saturday’s game against the Bulldogs is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Fort Worth’s Farrington Field.
