WHS Athletic Hall of Fame — 2013 inductee Rodney Kelley

On Saturday, WHS grad Rodney Kelley will be inducted into the Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place in the Jerry Durant Auditorium at WHS, beginning at 9 a.m. with a brunch and ceremony to follow. The public is invited to attend the free-admission event.

Kelley was an offensive lineman for the Kangaroos from 1958 through 1961. He was a three-year letterman and was a unanimous selection for the All-District team and All-State Honorable Mention in 1959 and 1960. 

Kelley also played basketball and was on the Roos’ track & field squad. He graduated with Honors in 1961. 

After graduation from WHS, Rodney went to the University of Texas in Austin on a scholarship and was a letterman on the UT National Championship team of 1963. He played under the legendary Darrell Royal, and his former high school coach, WHS Hall of Famer Russell Coffee. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Longhorns championship team. 

Kelley’s university degrees include a BA in Microbiology from UT-Austin, MS in Metallurgical Engineering from UT-El Paso with Honors and post-graduate studies in Business from the University of Houston.

Rodney and (eventual) wife Liz met at the University of Texas in the Microbiology Lab and were married in 1964, just having celebrated 49 years of marriage. The couple work at Coldwell Banker United Realtors in Houston.

Liz and Rodney have three children and nine grandchildren.
