Familiar postseason slots for local teams as playoffs begin

WEATHERFORD —

The past several seasons have seen the Aledo Ladycats varsity volleyball team go undefeated through its district schedule.

The 2012 district season adds another ditto to the string, as head coach Kathy Goings has again groomed the AHS girls for another state playoff run.

The Ladycats look to return to the regional tourney, as they have the past three seasons, but this time as a stepping stone to the state championship tournament.

About the only thing Aledo volleyball has lost of late has been a coin flip, as AHS, the No. 1 seed from District 7-4A and ranked by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) poll at No. 3, will travel to play District 8-4A’s No. 4 seed, Burleson Centennial, on Tuesday. The Class 4A, Region I bi-district match is set for 6:30 p.m.

Since the arrival of head coach Keith Guyon on the volleyball scene, Brock has seen a decided upturn in its fortunes. The Lady Eagles, ranked No. 2 by the TGCA, swept through District 9-2A in their 2012 campaign and prepare for another postseason bid to go deep into the Class 2A brackets.

With four starting seniors and a strong roster of underclassmen, Brock hopes to take its playoff run to the next step — the state tourney. The BHS girls trek begins later this week in the Class 2A, Region II Area round, as they await the outcome of Tuesday’s bi-district match between Whitesboro and Sunnyvale.

Resurgent Peaster, a perennial playoff contender in times past, has returned to the playoff mix under the tutelage of head coach Autumn  Threet. The Lady Greyhounds finished with a 8-2 record in District 9-2A and take a second seed into the bi-district round.

Peaster, also included in the rankings by the TGCA, will play Grandview’s Lady Zebras at Castleberry High School on Tuesday. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.

All of the area district winners won big, meaning undefeated in their title runs, and Springtown is a member of that group. While moving down to Class 3A this season, the quality of the Lady Porcupines’ play took a big leap forward.

With a 28-2 season record and a No. 7 ranking in the TGCA poll, Pojo awaits the outcome of the Class 3A, Region I bi-district match between Glen Rose and Llano.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
