Local teams serve up 2013 volleyball season

— Staff Report

The Weatherford varsity opened its volleyball season on a positive note earlier this week, winning a tight first game and going on to sweep O.D. Wyatt, 25-23, 25-10, 25-6.

At the Saginaw Tournament on Thursday, the Lady Roos came up short in a best-of-three match with Lorena, losing  22-25, 25-22, 25-12. The WHS girls bounced back to beat  Joshua in straight sets, 27-25, 26-24 and also swept Calvary Christian 25-18, 25-18.

On Friday, Weatherford overcame a slow start against Eastern Hills, but pulled out a win in three games, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13. After losing the first game of the match with Boswell (13-25), the Weatherford girls fought back, barely falling short in the second game, 24-26. Against a tall and talented Irving Nimitz squad, the Lady Roos pleased head coach Natalie Gonzales with a gutsy effort. After dropping the first game of the match, WHS stepped its game up a notch and played themselves into Saturday’s Bronze bracket by beating Nimitz in three, 19-25, 29-27, 25-21.

Saturday’s results were not available at press time.

Millsap also started its regular-season play with a win. After the Lady Bulldogs took the opening set, 25-21, the hosting Mineral Wells Lady Rams came back with a 25-19 win to square the match. With the third game knotted at 21, the Lady Bulldogs scored four unanswered points, paced by a pair of kills from senior middle Katie Rich and a stopper by Hannah Hobson, to take the rubber set, 25-21.

Springtown dropped its opener against a very tough Argyle team on Tuesday, but evened its season record on Thursday, playing its first game of the Grandview Tournament against Glen Rose. In the best-of-three format at the tourney, the Lady Porcupines jumped into the winner’s bracket, beating Glen Rose in the first match, 25-17, 25-15.

Ashley Mainord was a force for Pojo on offense and defense, leading the squad with six kills and scooping out seven digs. Brooklyn Dauenhauer and Katelynn Mainord had five kills each, with Katelynn leading the team with four and a half blocks.
