Campbell’s crystal ball has Bearcats at No. 3, drawing Div. II postseason

Sports enthusiasts — specifically Texas prep gridiron followers — are apt to await the summer publication of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine with bated breath. Delving into the listing of the state’s high school football teams can consume hours for readers who are so-inclined.

The magazine includes not only facts and figures along with brief analyses for virtually all of the varsity squads, from Class 5A to private preps, it climbs out on the proverbial limb with pre-season predictions.

Among Campbell’s 2013 prophecies are lofty expectations for the Aledo Bearcats. Not that high hopes for the black and orange is a stretch, but related predictions put Aledo in a favorable light at playoff time.

The Bearcats, who entered postseason in Class 4A’s Division I (big school) bracket last season, experienced an uncharacteristically early exit when the draw matched them against the eventual state champion Denton Guyer squad.

While Guyer is forecasted to repeat its Div. I title claim for the coming season, with UT commit Jerrod Heard returning for his senior swan song, the mag has Aledo ranked No. 3 among Class 4A gridders for 2013, and surmises that the Bearcats will end up in Division II brackets, as well.

Texas Football anticipates the return of Arlington Heights to respectability, and the postseason picture, in the coming season. The Yellowjackets’ fortunes fell dramatically in 2012 (2-8) after a 9-3 showing in the previous year.

When the top four seeds are established at the end of district play (regardless of final standings), the two bigger-enrollment school head to the Division I bracket, with the smaller schools to Division II.

With a couple of other tumblers falling into place in District 7-4A, the Bearcats could find themselves in the Div II playoffs, and the opportunity to ‘pick on schools their own size.’

Cambell’s has Aledo reaching, and winning, the Region I title.

Of course, the scenarios are endless and can change before even the district schedules are played out, but the conjecture is still fun.
