Hounds blink after early defensive match

The annual meeting at Weatherford College’s Roger Williams Ballpark between Brock and Peaster has proved an equalizing effect in some of their previous games. Thursday night’s contest had early earmarks of being one of those matches.

Good pitching and crisp defense lasted exactly halfway through the contest, before the Eagles’ bats heated up and the Hounds gloves had a hiccup. Peaster failed to recover from the fourth-inning missteps, with Brock taking the District 9-2A match, 5-2.

Getting his first start on the mound since coming back from an injury, Brock senior Shay Phillips glided through most of the game recording the win, only once allowing a runner in scoring position through four frames.

The Hounds’ Asa Menchaca was solid through three, as well, until the Brock offensive floodgates opened in the bottom of the fourth, with the Eagles scoring four runs.

Tyler Nelson singled, stole second and took advantage of a passed ball to reach third, scoring on an infield error. The big shot of the inning was Titus Gossett’s triple, sending Kolbin Mills across the plate.

Brock added a run in the fifth and Peaster got on the board in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs.

Brock (11-1) will conclude district play on Friday at Ponder, with Peaster (5-6) celebrating Senior Night and hosting Boyd. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m. starts.
