BIG SPRING, Tex. – With one rodeo to go in the regular season, four Weatherford College cowboys have already clinched a berth in the College National Finals Rodeo and the WC men are holding on to a slim lead for a nationals berth as a team.
After the Howard College Rodeo over the weekend, Paul Melvin (Steer Wrestling), Casey Tew and Landon Williams (Team Roping) and Jared Parsonage (Bull Riding) have all punched their tickets to the CNFR, to be held June 15-21 in Casper, Wyoming. This marks the tenth consecutive season that WC has sent representatives to the prestigious event.
Williams is making his second consecutive trip to Casper. The Midland native leads the Team Roping-Healing standings by 125 points. Tew, originally from Montana, clinched the Team Roping-Header championship. The duo won sixth place in Big Spring.
Melvin, a Paradise High School graduate, won the Steer Wrestling event in Big Spring, his second win in three weekends. He leads the Southwest Region standings by 170 points.
The WC men’s team has a narrow 40-point lead over third place Odessa College in the Southwest Region. The top two teams will advance to Casper.
WC has several others with a chance to qualify as individuals: Cole Wheeler, currently third in Team Roping-Header; Aaron Macy, within reach in both Team Roping and Tie-Down Roping; Coledon Harmon and Kody Mahaffrey with a chance in Steer Wrestling; and Brooke Sully, who stands at fourth place in Breakaway Roping after finishing third last weekend.
Skylar Ragan placed in Barrel Racing for the fifth time this season, winning third in Big Spring.
The final regular season rodeo takes place at Tarleton State University in Stephenville April 24-26.
