Local girls thrive, survive first round

Area baseball teams’ bi-district pairings slated

Four area softball teams entered the second-season fray last week, with three of those advancing to their respective Area rounds.

Aledo’s Ladycats has the easiest skate in the opening playoff round, taking care of Crowley in a run-rule shortened contest. The Brock Lady Eagles took a few innings to wake up their bats, but cruised to a win after a handful of runs in the third, eliminating Whitney.

The Weatherford girls should be sufficiently battle tested after a pair of 1-run wins over Keller Timber Creek, as they prepare for another best-of-three series. The Lady Roos head west and will take on Lubbock Coronado’s Lady Mustangs, who blanked El Dorado in both of their contests last week.

Both teams are No. 2 seeds from their respective districts. The series will be played out at Angelo State University, in San Angelo.

A single playoff game will decide the Area qualifier on Thursday as Weatherford Kangaroos baseball takes the field at Quik Trip Park against Keller Fossil Ridge. The one-gamer features the three seed Roos against the runner-ups from District 4-5A.

Aledo (Class 4A, Region I) and Springtown (Class 3A, Region I) both play best-of-three series, against Crowley and Graham respectively, which will extend into the weekend.

In Class 2A, top-ranked Brock draws home field advantage in a single-game series, hosting Godley on Thursday.

Peaster, the third seed from District 9-2A, faces second seeded Maypearl from District 10. The potential 3-game set will be played in its entirety at Brewer High School.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
