WC women beat Odessa at Region V Tourney

—

Staff Report

The Weatherford College Lady Coyotes were by far the most dominant team on the first day of the NJCAA Region V Women’s Basketball Tournament. The tourney is being played at Lubbock Christian University, and will be played out Wednesday through Saturday. Leading early and extending the advantage through both periods, WC beat first-round opponent Odessa College, 95-64. The Lady Chaps never made a significant move in the second half, as WC’s half court offense was as effective as the transition game.

At the end of the day, Weatherford College was the only team from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) to enjoy success, as all three of the other teams from the Western Conference enjoyed success.

In other action on the day, Midland slipped by Collin County College, 71-68, and New Mexico JC had a relatively easy time with McLennan, winning 67-54. In the final game of the day, South Plains College was enjoying an expanding double-digit lead over Temple with less than 10 minutes left in the contest.

The women cede the court to the men’s first round of play on Thursday, and will pick back up in the second round on Friday. WC will play New Mexico at noon.

WC Baseball: The Coyotes had a rough beginning in NTJCAC play on Wednesday, dropping both ends of a double header played at Temple College, 3-0 and 5-2. WC gets an opportunity to neutralize the losses on Saturday, hosting Temple with 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. starts at Roger Williams Ballpark.

WC Softball schedule changes: The non-conference home games against Trinity Valley scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled. Saturday’s conference double header, with WC hosting Grayson, have been moved to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
