Aledo rolls on with 69-14 romp over Coyotes

A 97-yard run by backup running back Isaiah Mallory capped yet another dominating performance by Aledo (14-0), who is still looking for a viable challenger in Class 4A, Division II playoff competition. With their 69-14 win over Wichita Falls at Waxahachie's Lumpkin Stadium, the Bearcats will meet the Ennis Lions in the state semifinal round. Ennis, who beat Mesquite Poteet on Thursday, will come into Saturday's game with four days more rest than Aledo, though the Bearcats' starters were rested for most of the second half on Monday.

While Aledo's offense was its usually potent self, the Bearcat defense was stifling for another offense (Wichita Falls) who had been very productive through its playoff run. Aledo held the Coyotes to less than 230 yards of offense, most of the yards coming from a long pass play when an Aledo defender lost footing, and a long run against the second-team defense.

Nearly midway through the opening quarter, Aledo's Daythan Davis finished a Bearcats drive with a 3-yard plunge, which opened the floodgates for the Aledo offense. With subsequent TDs on a Luke Bishop to Ryan Newsome pass, a 1-yard run by Jess Anders and blocked punt recovery in the end zone, the Bearcats held a 28-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Wichita Falls scored on the first play of the second quarter, but the Coyotes' respite was short-lived as Aledo reeled off three more TDs, to take a 49-7 lead into the break.

The time and site for the Ennis-Aledo semifinal match is to be announced.

  • Fitting the pieces together

That coaches will move on, due to advancement of career, life changes or a myriad of other influences, is a given. Aledo is not immune to the turnover, but is year-in and year-out apt to experience very modest changes, due to another myriad of positive factors.
