Baseball/Softball recaps - Apr. 17, 2013

— Roos bounce back with three consecutive wins after dropping pair

Staff Report

North Crowley was Weatherford varsity baseball’s latest victim, as the Roos ran their District 3-5A win streak to three straight with a 9-1 thrashing of the Panthers on Tuesday, at Raymond E. Curtis Field.

After a North Crowley run in the top of the second, WHS answered with a matching score in the bottom half, adding another in the third frame before busting the game open with a handful of runs in the fourth. Brock Riebe’s RBI triple kicked off the big inning, and the big blast to end the scoring in the frame was a Dustin Williams 2-run homer over the left field wall.

Andy Rogers’ bat was still warm from his 3-homer performance against Paschal on Friday, as the junior hit a double and scored off a Grayson Huffman single to begin the Roos scoring on the night.

Huffman appeared on the mound in relief of starter Matt Riney, who pitched four 2-hit innings and struck out a half dozen NC hitters.

Weatherford improves to 9-3 in district play and will travel to play at Arlington Lamar on Friday. The Roos close out their district schedule on Friday, Apr. 26, hosting Arlington Sam Houston on Senior Night.

Bailee Wortham no-hits Grayson en route to Weatherford College sweep

Staff Report

While the WC Lady Coyotes’ bats remain piping hot, the pitching staff is certainly doing its part, as well. Hurler Bailee Wortham fanned nine Grayson Batters on Monday, throwing a no-hitter over six innings against North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference foe Grayson. Wortham walked three hitters, but they remained stranded in the 12-0 win.

WC scoring came in bunches, scoring three runs each in the first and third innings, and rallying for six runs in the sixth, prompting the early end of the game.
