The District 3-5A softball season is done and the top four candidates for postseason play has been determined. Again, the Weatherford Lady Roos have captured yet another district crown, though they share the title with Arlington Martin.
Looking to the goal of perhaps a more ‘attractive’ opponent in the bi-district round of the University Interscholastic League playoffs, Weatherford and Martin will decide the No. 1 seed on Friday, seeking a ‘W3’ designation (Winner - Dist. 3) rather than a runner-up slot in the Class 5A playoff bracket.
On paper, or in the score book, the Lady Roos look to have the advantage, with more dominating performances through the district schedule. In its away-home, head-to-head district matches, Weatherford soundly beat the Lady Warriors in the first meeting (13-4). Martin changed its starting pitcher in the rematch, which the Arlington school won, 4-3.
Based on district results and past performances, Martin may be tempted to go with Lauren Condley, previously listed as the Lady Warriors’ No. 2 pitcher, while Weatherford will put its top starter, Kelsey O’Brien, in the circle.
Capturing the top seeding could mean a drastic opponent-calibre difference in bi-district, as District 3 will match up against District 4 in the opening round. Friday’s winner will play Justin Northwest, a less-threatening foe than Southlake Carroll, whom the loser will likely play.
The Lady Roos have also scheduled a warm-up game on Saturday, playing at Burleson Centennial with a 2 p.m. start. Postseason play will begin on April 30.
