Local girls medal at Junior Olympics

Staff Report

After doing quite well at shooting disciplines in state competition — in fact, well enough to earn an invite to the National Junior Olympics — Mindy Miles and Sydney Casey continued respective successes on the national stage.

Thirteen-year old Sydney, won a bronze medal (third-place) in air rifle and placed fifth in small bore competition, both in her age category. She also reached a new level, posting a personnel best score in both disciplines.

Mindy (16) made a formidable impact at the Olympic competition, winning a silver medal in air rifle in her age category, while also placing sixth overall, across all of the divisions. Miles also took a bronze in her categories’ small bore event.

Miles had to win a shoot-off to reach the overall finals, and made the best of her opportunity, shooting the highest score of the final round (104.8), moving up from eighth to her sixth-place berth.

Although Mindy missed a medal in the air rifle overall, she was the only competitor in the field to reach two event finals, and recorded the two highest final scores in the process.

Back home in the Weatherford area, both olympians will continue to hone their craft, and can likely be found at Lone Star Guns and Gallery, their home range, on a regular basis as they shoot to return to national competition.
