USC recruit makes last statement as Aledo falls

GARLAND — GARLAND — Lucas- Lovejoy made a successful transition from Class 3A on Saturday.  After winning the last four state titles in their former division, the Lady Horns beat Aledo on Saturday to win the Class 4A volleyball state championship.

The Ladycats defense was successful in slowing all other Lovejoy hitters, but could not stem the domination displayed by outside hitter Ebony Nwanebu. The 6'4" USC commit had 26 successful kills in the 3-game title match that Lovejoy won, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21.

Senior Briana Sharratt led the Aledo offense with 12 kills, while junior Raygan McLelland added eight. McLellan was Aledo's most effective deterrent to the Lovejoy attack, with 14 digs for the Ladycats. Tyler Lucas had 10.

In the semifinal on Thursday against Friendswood, Aledo deployed a defensive scheme against the Lady Mustangs' big hitter, Jillian Bergeson. The Ladycats won the semifinal in five games. But Nwanebu proved an obstacle tougher to overcome for Aledo, as the Ladycats did very well to contend as well as they did in each game.

Aledo's state tourney year produced a 41-6 overall record. The Ladycats are the 2012 District 7-4A champs with a 14-0 record and a perfect 42-0 game count.
