— Coyote baseball splits with MCC; Final doubleheader will determine playoffs

Staff Report

Weatherford College baseball split with McLennan Community College on Wednesday, losing Game 1 of the double header,13-8, and winning the night cap, 9-4, at Roger Williams Ballpark. The split set up a meaningful finale between the two teams in Waco Saturday, as the doubleheader will determine the fourth seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Association (NTJCAC) who will move on to play in the Region V tournament.

WC lost game one despite racking up nine hits and eight runs. MCC did most of its damage in three innings putting up three runs in the second, three more in the fourth and five in the fifth. Weatherford’s Scotland Church was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Coyote reliever Chaz Fowler led the way in game two, allowing just two hits, no earned runs and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings of work.  Three WC players recorded three hits each — Zac Michener (3-for-4, 3 RBIs), Shane Crawford (3-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Daniel Williams (3-for-4, 1 RBI).

Weatherford (30-23 overall, 15-15 in conference) and McLennan (28-24, 16-14) will play a doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark on Saturday. WC will must win both games to earn a berth in the regional tourney. Peter Hendel will start game one for WC; Hendel has pitched complete game shutouts in his last two outings.
