One of three area softball postseason teams were back in action on Thursday, playing second-round matches in the state playoffs. Aledo, playing Game 1 of the best-of-three series at home, took on Northwest’s Byron Nelson.
Also deciding their respective Area rounds with best-of-three series, Weatherford (Class 5A, Region I and Brock (Class 2A, Region II) begin on Friday.

Aledo 12, Nelson 2
ALEDO — Byron Nelson scored first, but not nearly enough as the Ladycats answered early, often and with crooked numbers to take a commanding lead just two innings deep into Game 1 of a Class 4A Region I Area match.
Perpetuating their district-slate habit of premature ends to scheduled 7-inning games, Aledo ended another one in brief fashion, run-ruling the Lady Bobcats in four and a half frames, winning 12-2
After a 3-run first inning put the Ladycats on top to stay, Aledo’s big inning came in the second, spurred by a base-clearing double from Chickie Cook, who led Aledo with three RBIs.
The fireworks were far from over, as the bottom of the third saw the Ladycats send two out of the park. Rhylie Makawe’s solo stroke cleared the centerfield wall, and after Cook reached with a walk, Megan Mason took one over the left field fence, providing the 10-run margin that would hold through the top of the fifth.
Aledo travels to Nelson High on Friday for a Game 2, slated for a 7 p.m. start.
Ridge 4, Weatherford 3
GRAND PRAIRIE — Looking to make their mark early in the one-game series in a Class 5A, Region I Bi-district contest against Fossil Ridge, the Roos wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Thursday at Quik Trip Park.
