Back to business for local cagers after tourney trips

WEATHERFORD —

Whether traveling to the east coast or staying at home for the holiday tournaments, area basketball teams enjoyed success in varying degrees last weekend. The extra repetitions in non-district play always help inject a dose of extra preparation, and starting this week the in-game practice will again be put to good use for squads continuing, or perhaps beginning district play.

The most traveled Parker County team was the Lady Eagles, as Brock took in the KSA  Events tournament, held in Orlando, Fla., and very nearly brought back a championship trophy.

The BHS girls won their first two games easily over New Jersey’s Ocean City (36-24) and Pennsylvania’s Beaver Falls (68-32) and lost a close match in the championship game to the Cherokee Lady Warriors (39-35), a team from Canton, Ga.

Brock picks back up with District 9-2A play play on Thursday, on the road for a much shorter trip to resume their slate at Alvord.

The Brock boys made their annual visit to the Whataburger Tournament, easing past Sanger and edging out Argyle, and took a runner-up trophy home with a loss to Kennedale in the Blue Division championship game. The Eagles resume their schedule on Thursday at Alvord.

After winning its first game at the Mansfield Invitational, Aledo’s Ladycats were knocked from the championship bracket, but won out to claim 7th-place in a 32-team field. Aledo resumes district on Saturday, hosting Southwest at 4:30 p.m.

The Bearcats won all the way to the finals of the Aledo-hosted Moritz Holiday Classic, beating Joshua, Haltom and Mansfield Legacy along the way. But the visitors from Converse Judson proved too tough as Aledo settled for the runner-up spot. The Bearcats cede home-court advantage in the short run, resuming district play at Southwest on Friday.
