Bearcats lead early, fall late to Heights

ALEDO — After the Little Dribblers exhibition at halftime of the District 7-4A contest between the Arlington Heights Yellowjackets and host Aledo, quite a few of the parents decided to stay, to watch the close match that had developed by the break.

Those who did stay were rewarded with a good ball game, but one that saw Aledo’s late run fall short in a 51-47 loss to Heights.

The Bearcats hustling defense broke up Heights offensive rhythm early on, forcing several turnovers, while Aledo found the basket often enough to take a 13-4 lead by the close of the first quarter.

As the pace picked up in the second stanza, so too, did the ‘Jackets point production, taking a single-point lead into the locker room.

Aledo evened the score in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, and stayed close until the turnovers began to swing the other way, allowing Arlington Heights to build a 7-point lead heading into the final period.

With the margin still in the Yellowjackets favor midway through the fourth, Aledo head coach Steve Smith platooned his full-court press specialists, who managed measured disruption of the offensive flow.

Heights’ poor free-throw shooting down the stretch gave opportunities for Aledo to close the gap further, but the Bearcats’ shooting turned as cold as the outside air. Aledo drew to within three with less than a minute left, but could not close the deal.

With three district losses in a row, Aledo will try to get back into the win column on Friday when they travel to play FW South Hills.
