FORT WORTH — The Weatherford Lady Kangaroos’ defense was in force early in the Class 5A, Region I bi-district match against Southlake Carroll on Monday. Trailing by a single basket late into the opening period, A Lady Dragons offensive rush extended the lead to eight.

Though WHS fought back to close the gap in the second quarter, Carroll deployed an effective trapping defense that extended to half court and eventually ran away with the contest played at Nolan Catholic High School, 78-38.

By the 2-minute mark in the second period, the Weatherford girls proceeded to  close a 14-point gap down to five, as the shots began falling and the defensive stops slowed Carroll. The 15-6 run came after Lady Roos head coach Darryn Shearmire called a time out at 5:45 to regroup.

But after the near comeback, the Lady Dragons, winners of District 4-5A, embarked on an 18-0 run spanning halftime. Carroll combined a full-court press during the waylay to compliment the trapping half-court defense that disrupted the Weatherford offensive effectivity in the second.

The Lady Dragons perimeter game heated up in the second half, eventually opening up opportunities on the inside and opening creases for its guards.

True to the form leading the Lady Roos to a 20-13 overall season record and their first playoff appearance in several seasons, the WHS girls stayed busy on defense, contesting shots to the end. But the offense could not muster the consistency to stay with the Lady Dragons.

Carroll improved to 22-9 on the season and will face the El Paso Franklin-Midland Lee winner later in the week.
