Brock earns (another) trip to Austin; looking for ‘Fab Five’

—

By GREG WEBB

STEPHENVILLE — With a formidable — and very loud — contingent of fans on hand at Tarleton State University’s Wisdom Gym on Saturday, Brock jumped off to the early lead, which would bode well after the Alvord Lady Bulldogs’ play picked up later in the game.

Although the Lady Eagles’ 12-point halftime lead would never shrink below seven points, Alvord showed signs of life in the third period. Brock regained its composure in the final period to win the Class 2A, Region II final, 46-36.

“It was nice to get off to that good start,” said Brock head coach Chance Westmoreland, “with Lexie [Ducat] and Taylor Wallace helping us get an early lead, though it didn’t always feel like a 10-point lead.

“But I feel like if we can get up early on a team, our defense can make it feel like a bigger one.”

Ducat and Braylee Flaska each scored 10 points, with Taylor Wallace leading the offensive march with 11.

Brock will make its fifth-straight trip to Austin this week, vying a fifth consecutive title. The BHS girls will play Friday, in the semifinal round of the State Tournament, held at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

In the regional semi-final match at TSU on Friday, Brock was just too “too” for Alba Golden. Too quick, too tall, too defensive, too offensive... and just way too good for the Lady Panthers. Brock won, 49-18.

With the Lady Eagles’ back court efficiently moving the ball and creating an abundance of clear looks from the perimeter, the bread and butter for the Brock offense was, early on, an inside toss to Lexie Ducat, who occasionally scored at will.

Ducat and Cora Jenkins effectively shut down the inside game for Alba Golden on the other end of the court, as well, relegating the Lady Panthers to ‘too’ many shots outside the arc, with few of those qualifying as open looks.
