Staffing for Roo directions

Re-tooling football staff just the beginning, as WISD athletics welcomes additional new mentors to its coaching ranks

— By GREG WEBB

Weatherford ISD’s first high-profile coaching hire came early in the calendar year, when Weldon Nelms agreed to head up the Kangaroo football program in February. Nelms came to Roo-land after a successful run at Class 3A Wimberley, which included two state football championships, the most recent one in the 2012 season.

Nelms brought three former Wimberley coaches with him — Dick Smith (defensive coordinator), Jerod Fikac (offensive coordinator) and Kip Holt (defensive secondary).

WISD has added a couple of others with earlier ties to Nelms to the mix, with Ricky Beaty (quarterback coach) and Shane Dunn (offensive line), coming from Tarleton State (grad assistant) and Sealy High School, respectively. They will join Weatherford football coaches already sporting the blue.

“We feel very fortunate to have someone with Coach Nelms’ experience and tradition for success come to Weatherford,” said WISD Executive Athletic Director Richard Scoggin, who is entering his second year as Weatherford’s AD. “And that he had so many coaches and former players follow him to Weatherford certainly speaks well for their confidence and dedication for him.”

Holt is a new head coach for the district, as well, as he will take over the head track coaching slot for boys’ track and field. Beaty and Dunn will also fill assistant coaching positions, in basketball and power lifting, respectively. The assistants coaches are two of nine new assistants WISD has added to the coaching ranks this summer.

At this writing, there was yet work to do for Scoggin, WISD administrators and the school board, with four more assistant coach slots to fill.

Another head coach addition for WHS is Brian Miller, who has taken over the Roos basketball program, vacated last year when Terry Ferguson stepped down from the position. Ferguson will stay on with WISD as the head of the Social Studies Department.
