Coyotes let Ranger slip by in seventh inning

Staff Report

Despite a 4-run rally by Weatherford College to take a 7-6 lead into the final frame in a NTJCAC contest on Saturday in Ranger, the Coyotes gave up a 2-run homer, losing game one of a double header, 8-7.

WC’s Hunter Lockwood was the spark for the Coyotes offense, racking up four RBIs in the game.

WC baseball scored five runs in the opening frame of game two, and led 5-2 going into the top of the second inning.

At press time, WC led 9-2 after three complete innings.

Weatherford College softball sweeps McLennan

Staff Report

With the score tied at 1-1 in the sixth inning Saturday at Stuart field, the WC Lady Coyotes loaded the bases with the first three batters, then made two consecutive outs.

Marissa Pereyra then stoked a clutch single and WC put three runs on the board in the inning. With one out and a runner on base, Kylee Studioso fanned the final two McLennan hitters to preserve the 4-1 win.

Bailee Wortham stepped in the circle in game two as WC again allowed just a single run, sweeping the NTJCAC double header by a 6-1 count.

WC did its damage in the third inning, featuring a 2-RBI double by first baseman Luci Ponce.

McLennan answered with a run in the fourth, but that would be all the scoring for the High Lassies, with Weatherford adding another pair of runs in the sixth.

Wortham scattered six hits and struck out three batters in the game.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
