Ladycats blank Guyer in series opener

— Staff Report

Hedging their bets against potential wet weather, the Aledo Ladycats hosted Denton Guyer on Wednesday in the first game of a best-of-three set in a Class 4A area match. Aledo scored late in the game, a sixth-inning 2-RBI single off the bat of Ally Gabbert. The lead held, with the Ladycats beating Guyer, 2-0.

A defensive battle ensued from the start in the Region I contest, with the scoreboard showing goose eggs through the top of the sixth. An error to start the bottom frame gave Aledo a base runner, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.

After another bunt resulted in an out at home as Aledo tried to squeeze a runner across, but Gabbert's single untimately decided the affair as she knocked in Kadyn Kirkpatrick and Sammie Clarkson.

Lauren Craine went the distance in the circle for the Ladycats, surrendering just three hits and enjoying a solid, errorless defensive effort behind her.

Aledo and Guyer continue the area series on Friday, traveling to Denton for a 7 p.m. start.
