Roos fall behind early, drop Game 1 to Richland

Staff Report

Errors and costly free passes dug an early hole for Weatherford on Friday, as the Kangaroos traveled to meet the Richland Rebels in the first game of a Class 5A, Region bi-district best-of-three match. A 5-run deficit after three complete innings proved too much for the Roos to erase as they eventually took the loss, 7-2.

WHS got off to a good offensive start in the first frame. Back-to-back doubles by Andrew Healy and Will Young resulted in a run to open the scoring in the game.

But Richland wasted little time answering in its first at bat. Three singles, a double and a Roo error produced a lead the Rebels would never surrender in the game.

While the Roo bats banged out seven hits in the game, Richland pitcher Austin Pryor scattered the hits well, preventing a sustained rally by WHS.

Weatherford scored its second, and final,  run in the fourth inning, when Tony Rodriguez drilled a single into right, scoring Will Young.

Pryor re-established the 5-run deficit and helped his own cause with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Game 2 was set for Saturday as the Roos returned to Raymond E. Curtis to try to even the series. Check the sports page on www.weatherforddemocrat.com for post-game results.

Ladycats comeback sinks Guyer, clinches Class 4A Area series

Staff Report

Aledo rallied for four runs in the sixth inning, and held on for a 5-4 win in a Class 4A, Region I Area softball playoff in Denton on Friday.

Down 4-1 entering the rally frame, a single from Kori Kizer followed by an RBI double by Kadyn Kirkpatrick chased Guyer’s starting pitcher. But the Ladycats were just beginning their rally.

Alli Ramsey welcomed the reliever with the second double of the inning, pushing Kirkpatrick across. After a groundout advanced the runners and moved to second, Haylee Bowden  ripped a 2-RBI single to move the Ladycats past the Denton squad.

A guyer hitter reached on a single in the bottom of the seventh. but could get no further, as Aledo pitcher Lauren Crane retired the side with two groundouts and a pop fly.

Aledo will meet the winner of the Wichita Falls - Burleson Centennial playoff in the regional quarterfinal round at a site and time to be determined.
