Baseball playoff recaps - May 4, 2013

— Weatherford takes early bow from postseason play

Staff Report

Down 1-0 in the Class 5A Region I bi-district best-of-three series and in the Game 2 score at Curtis Field on Saturday, the varsity baseball Roos took advantage of two Richland errors and a passed ball, to take a 3-1 lead. The match settled in for a pitching duel through the next three innings, but Richland put up a crooked number in the top of the sixth to tie the contest.

Rebels' pitching stayed strong through the balance of the match,  adding another run in the seventh to take a 4-3 win, and the series. Weatherford got a runner in scoring position in the final frame but could not geta run home.

The Roos finish the 2013 season with an overall record of 34-6-1 and runners-up in District 3-5A.

Aledo closes out Centennial, move to Area round

Staff Report

After dropping the first contest in a Class 4A, Region I series against Burleson Centennial, Aledo used hitting, then pitching and defense to take the final two games, clinching the series Saturday with a 3-0 blanking of the Spartans at Goldstein Field in Fort Worth.

Mark Swift took the mound to start the rubber match, scattering four hits over as many innings. Aledo head coach Chad Barry inserted Colton Clanton in the fifth to take care of the next six outs. Tyson Mauser closed the seventh, but not before Centennial made it interesting, getting runners to second and third before a fly ball ended the match, and the series.

Aledo made the most of its five hits, rapping out three singles in the second inning to take the lead for good with two runs. The Bearcats added another in the fifth, spurred by Caleb Frysinger's 1-out triple.

The Bearcats move to the Area round, facing the winner of the Azle-Birdville bi-district playoff at a site/time to be determined.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
