As the high school football postseason presents its inaugural pairings this week, prep volleyball will close the door on its season, with the final 20 teams from Classes 1A through 5A trying to snatch the brass ring (and biggest trophy) at the 2012 edition of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Volleyball Tournament.
For Parker County residents, the weekend overlap of the two sports provides ample opportunity to see local teams compete. Brock and Aledo volleyball will play back-to-back on Thursday in the semi-final round of the state tourney in 2A and 4A matches respectively, to be held at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
The Lady Eagles, of Brock and of Holliday, will meet at 3 p.m. in the 2A semifinal. The Ladycats face off against Friendswood’s Lady Mustangs in the 5 p.m. 4A match. Winners of the state semifinal will play on Saturday, with Class 2A set for 11:30 a.m. and the 4A championship to be decided at 4:30 p.m.
Football bi-district round playoffs begin Thursday, with Aledo making its annual postseason appearance against the Cleburne Yellowjackets at Mansfield ISD’s Newsome Stadium. The Class 4A, Division 1, Region I contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Porcupines of Springtown return to the state playoffs in Class 3A, seeded as the No. 1 entry from District 6, meeting the Vernon Lions in a Region I bi-district match. The Division 2 playoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
