WC women to face early test at nationals

The Weatherford College Lady Coyote basketball team will open the NJCAA Tournament against Northeast Community College on Monday, with a 10 a.m. start. The tourney’s venue is at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan.

WC enters the bracket as the 16th seed in the 24-team field. Northeast is seeded 17th. The winner of Monday’s game will face the top-ranked seed Trinity Valley (32-1) on Tuesday, at 2 p.m.

The Lady Coyotes (24-5) last played in the national tournament in 2004, and is making their sixth NJCAA tournament appearance in the WC program’s history, the fourth under head coach Bob McKinley.

Northeast (28-4), located in Norfolk, Neb., has won 17 of their last 19 games. The Lady Hawks are led by sophomore guard Andrea Johnson of Silver Springs, Maryland, who averaged 11.7 points per game and 2.6 assists in the regular season. Jaylan Spencer, a six-foot Omaha native, averages 10.6 points.

The 2013 national tournament features a new bracket that includes four at-large teams, four zone qualifiers and 16 district/region champions. Both Weatherford and Northeast earned berths as zone qualifiers after reaching the finals of their respective regional tournaments. The single-elimination tournament will be played at the Bicentennial Center for the 16th-consecutive season.
