Baseball/Softball —Postseason recaps

Barn-burner score fest ends with Aledo walk-off in Game 1

Staff Report

By the time the Burleson Centennial hitters began to figure out Aledo’s Lauren Craine, the Lady Spartans were already down by five runs in the Class 4A Region I Quarterfinal softball contest. Centennial’s first 13 batters were sent back to the dugout without success as Craine put the ball in play and the Aledo defense answered.

But the game took on another identify the deeper it progressed, ending with a 2-out, 2-run rally by the Ladycats, resulting in a wild and woolly 12-11 win.

The Ladycats answered Centennial’s 2-run top of the fifth, their first baserunners and runs of the game, with a another handful of runs in the bottom half.

Centennial scored two more runs in the next stanza, but found itself down 10-4 coming to the plate for their final at bat.

Everything got interesting after that.

The Lady Spartans rocked Aledo for seven 7th-inning runs, taking a 11-10 lead on a grand slam, before Tori Gore stepped into the circle to stop the bleeding.

In the Ladycats last gasp, Allie Arneson singled into right center with two outs. Rhylie Makawe kept the Ladycats alive with another single down the left field line. A passed ball put both Aledo runners in scoring position.

Alex Cook kept the cool head with two on and two out, punching a single to center. Arneson and Makawe crossed the plate to complete the comeback.

Game 2 (and 3, if needed) were set to resume on Saturday, in Burleson. Check the sports section of www.weatherforddemocrat.com for results.

Finding themselves in an unfamiliar situation after a couple of innings, down 4-1, Brock rebounded in third to retake the lead. Facing Gunter in the first game of a Class 2A Area best-of-three series, the Tigers bats lit up the cloudy night in the bottom of the third frame, scoring seven in the inning to take a 11-6 advantage.
