— Brock bows out with series loss to Gunter
After the Brock Eagles fell to Gunter 13-7 in the first game of a Class 2A best-of-three series on Friday, the second game remained a tight contest until the Tigers had a burst of offense in the final frame.
Gunter led by a single run entering the seventh frame at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School on Saturday, but tacked on four more with a couple of extra-base hits, winning the game 7-2, when the Eagles failed to respond on the bottom half.
By Brock standards, the postseason suffers a premature ending. The Eagles finish the season with a 29-5 over all record.
Ladycats eliminate Centennial, head to regional semifinal round
Game 2 of the Class 4A, Region I quarterfinal between Aledo and Burleson Centennial on Saturday lacked the white-knuckling drama of Friday's 12-11 Ladycats' win, but the result was the same.
Aledo did have to come back in the game, as they had the night before, as the Lady Spartans got on the board first, in the first frame. A couple of early errors cost Aledo a couple of runs, but the AHS girls made up the deficit with three third-inning runs to give them the permanent lead.
Tori Gore worked the circle for the Ladycats, surrendering no earned runs as the Ladycats won the game, 7-2, taking the series in two games. Gore went the distance for Aledo, with the defense behind her tightening up to shut down the Centennial hitters through the final five frames.
Aledo's offense was led by shortstop Kadyn Kirkpatrick, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Kirkpatrick, Allie Arneson and Ally Gabbert had doubles on Saturday, while Haylee Bowden had a triple.
Aledo moves to the Region I semifinal, meeting the winner of the Plainview-Chapin series at a site and time to be determined.
Bearcats season ends with losses to Birdville
A pitcher's duel on Friday ended with a 1-0 win by Birdville over Aledo to begin the Class 4A Area best-of-three series on Friday.
Two productive innings on Saturday by the Hawks created a margin Aledo could not close, with the Bearcats coming up on the short end of an 8-4 decision.
Aledo ends its 2013 baseball season with a 27-10 overall mark and are the District 7-4A champions.
