Offense shines in Blue-White tilt

Weatherford football fans showed up to sample the new fare being served up by head  coach Weldon Nelms and his coaching staff on Thursday, after the coaches have spent the past few weeks adding new ingredients to the Roo offensive and defensive schemes during spring drills. The practices culminated with the annual Blue-White Spring Game.

Attendees noticed a new flavor to the varsity Offense right away, as quarterback Grant Werts aired out the pigskin early and often, trying to the get the ‘Blue’ Defense back on its heels. The Blue squad was unfettered to start the game, busting into the backfield to greet running backs early or to harass the QB on pass plays.

But as the White squad began to pick up the pace and, from the urgings of Nelms and the offensive staff, settle in to the rhythm of the hurry-up offense, the results were more effective by the second half, as the Offense bested the Defense in the scrimmage, 40-19.

There were crowd-pleasing moments on both sides of the ball, as the offense picked up the pace in the second half and the defense stayed active. The energy of the spring tilt was apparent, and consistent, perhaps leaving Roo fans with a tasty sampling of a new brand of football to hold them over until late August.
