Roos first-inning lead fades in loss to Arlington High
The Weatherford Kangaroo hitters got to Arlington High pitcher Omar Salinas early in a District 3-5A match on Tuesday, but not often, as the Colts bested WHS, 3-1.
Consecutive singles from Tony Rodriguez, Chase Zamarron and Andrew Healy to lead off the Roos’ first at bat netted a run for Rodriguez and a Healy RBI. But with the bases loaded and no outs after a Colts’ error, Salinas got a pair of K’s and a fly out to end the early Roos rally.
Arlington tied the game in the third with a start of the frame similar to the Roos’ first, but with the bases full, WHS pitcher Cory Bynum fanned two batters and induced a ground out to avoid a big inning by the Colts.
Arlington added a run each in the next two innings while Salinas and the Colts’ defense held Weatherford scoreless for the balance of the game.
The district standings are crowded at the top after Tuesday’s games, with Arlington Martin (8-2) holding a one-game edge over Weatherford, Arlington High and Paschal, all with 7-3 records. The Roos host Paschal on Friday at Curtis Field with a 7 p.m. start.
WHS blasts Lady Panthers for lock on second seed
Weatherford pitcher Kelso O’Brien allowed just one hit while fanning 11 North Crowley batters on Tuesday, as Lady Roo hitters banged out 17 hits in a 13-0 district win.
O’Brien bolstered her cause at the plate, as well, totalling four RBIs with a double and a home run. Abbey Cowan and Katelyn Miller also hit two-baggers, while Ashleigh Erb went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
The Lady Roos played errorless ball behind their pitcher, ending the game early with a 5-run splurge in the top of the sixth frame.
