ALEDO — The streak continues.
Aledo has not lost a district game since 2007, and kept the streak alive Friday night in convincing fashion with a 45-2 win over Fort Worth’s Arlington Heights. Bearcat head coach Tim Buchanan said his team played its best half of football of the year in staking itself to a 35-0 halftime lead.
“By my calculations, I think we had one blown assignment the entire first half,” Buchanan said after watching his team go to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in District 7-4A. “After coming off a bye week, it was great to put together a strong first quarter like we did.”
Arlington Heights is now 0-4 and 0-1 in district. Buchanan said his squad considered this a statement game because of all the fine athletes in the district.
“Arlington Heights is a good team,” the Aledo coach said. “They have some Division I players over there that are going to be able to have an effect.”
Aledo scored on its first five drives of the contest with both the rushing and passing games getting in on the fun. Quarterback Pate Davis was 7-7 for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter. Caleb Frysinger had a 3-yard scoring run and was the recipient of a 43-yard scoring toss in the first five minutes and change.
Davis wasn’t done aerially, finding both Willie Anderson (54 yards) and Taco Anderson (seven yards) for scoring strikes before halftime. While the offense was rolling up 291 of its 357 total yards in the first two quarters, the defense was doing its part, allowing just one first down and 28 total yards, all of them coming on a 28-yard pass play midway through the second quarter.
With the game in hand, Buchanan began substituting freely in the first half. He was most impressed with new backup quarterback Dylan Bush.
“I was proud of Dylan Bush,” Buchanan said. “We moved him to quarterback Wednesday after our backup (Ben Thomas) was found to have a stress fracture in his lower back and will be out for the season. Bush had just a day and a half to work with the varsity, and did a good job.”
Aledo will be working with a short week before its next district encounter, set to meet Fort Worth South Hills at Handley Field on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
