— Weatherford sends Lady Texans home early in 15-0 rout
An 8-run blitz by the Weatherford varsity in the first frame set the tone for the rest of a District 3-5A softball game at Lady Roos Field on Friday — and the match would be a short one. Ashleigh Erb’s leadoff triple jump-started the Lady Roo offense as WHS batted around the order. Weatherford had five runs on the board before Arlington Houston recorded an out.
The Lady Roos, who followed up with three second-inning runs, ended Houston’s misery in the fourth inning, scoring four more times to bring a run-rule halt to the match, with a final tally of 15-0.
Liz Konig was the most prolific at the plate for WHS, logging three hits and a pair of RBIs. Weatherford banged out 11 hits in the contest and were helped along by nine Lady Texan errors.
Kelso O’Brien went the short distance in the circle for the Lady Roos, but still retired nine Houston batters on strikeouts. The WHS defense played error-free ball behind Weatherford’s ace.
Weatherford improves to 6-1 in district play, with its only loss being to Arlington Martin, who the Lady Roos will play in the second round on Friday. In the meantime, the Lady Roos will host Arlington Bowie at home on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Swain throws 1-hitter to blank North Crowley
The Weatherford hitters generated a pair of runs in the second inning on Friday, which was plenty, as pitcher Andy Swain and the Kangaroo defense laid out a long string of goose eggs for the Panthers.
Spencer Hynes and Blake LaGrassa got the Roos going with a single and double, respectively, in the second. A pair of consecutive sac flies, by Zach Rodriguez and Hayden Rowell ushered both runners home.
