— Ninth-inning run breaks stalemate; Roos win, 1-0
Weatherford senior Andrew Healy’s RBI single in the top of the ninth saved another pitching gem by junior Beau Burrows as the Roos beat Arlington Lamar in a District 3-5A match on Tuesday, 1-0. Tony Rodriguez, who led off the inning with a single, crossed home plate from third base after advancing on a walk and a passed ball, setting up Healy’s game winner.
Burrows was on the mound for the duration of the extra-inning affair, lighting up Lamar’s hitters with 16 strikeouts while ceding just two hits and three walks. Both teams were defensively solid, with no errors committed.
Three Vikes pitchers combined efforts to limit Weatherford to three hits, and fanned 11 batters while offering up four free passes. Weatherford’s Spencer Hynes had the sole extra-base hit in the game, stroking a double in the first frame. A Weatherford runner tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at home.
The Roos improved their district mark to 5-1 and will host Arlington Houston on Friday. The district match, slated for a 7 p.m. start, will represent the halfway mark of the district season.
Aledo rallies in seventh to beat Granbury, 4-3
Down three runs and facing the prospect of being shutout and held hitless, the Aledo Bearcats’ bats woke up in the final inning on Friday, salvaging a 4-3 district win over Granbury.
A 2-out, bases-loaded single by Taco Anderson completed the comeback, knocking in two runs to tie the game at 3-all. Zayne Willems provided the walk-off hit with the next at-bat, sending Tyson Mauser across home with a single to centerfield.
Aledo head coach Chad Barry sent three different pitchers to the mound, with Mark Swift collecting the win.
Aledo moves to a 5-1 District 7-4A mark with the comeback win, and will complete first-round district play on Friday, traveling to play FW Trimble Tech at 7 p.m.
