Most of the area football teams reached another milestone in the annual list of events leading up to the start of the 2013 football season, this week.
Weatherford capped off a busy morning of activity with lunch for the coaches and players. Freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams were on hand, with just about everybody else but the band, as the Roos held their annual picture day events. After the final click of the camera shutter, attending parents and fans were treated to intrasquad scrimmages from all three teams followed by the luncheon.
Football practices will resume on Monday for the Roos, as head coach Weldon Nelms prepares for his first season as the skipper of the Weatherford football program. Nelms also brought in five assistant coaches to augment the staff already in place.
Another event has been planned to herald the beginning of Weatherford’s fall season of sports, designed to introduce the athletes and coaches, as well as other prevalent organizations and teams.
On Thursday, the general public is invited to a night “Meet the Roos,” to include music by the Roo Band, a dance routine by the Blue Belles and speakers, including Coach Nelms. The event will also include the introduction of the varsity football team, as well as athletes from the volleyball, cross country, fall tennis and fall golf teams.
WISD Executive Athletic Director Richard Scoggin will emcee the festivities, which are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. and last until 9 p.m.
On Friday, the freshman, JV and varsity football Roos will take the field at Ennis High School to scrimmage the Lions, with the 2013 regular-season opener slated the following Friday (Aug. 30), pitting Weatherford at Richland.
Millsap also put on its game ‘unies’ earlier this week for picture day, just a day before its opening scrimmage against Perrin on Friday, at Pirate Stadium. Since Class 2A does not hold spring workouts, its teams are allowed two scrimmages before the start of the regular season. Classes 1A and 3A are also allowed a second scrimmage.
The Bulldogs will travel to scrimmage against the Bowie Jackrabbits on Friday, and try to put some additional finishing touches on its newly-installed Slot-T offense before hosting Alvord in the opener.
The Bearcats varsity was ‘back-in-black’ on Thursday, as Aledo football also held its annual photo event. The freshman, JV and varsity gathered at Bearcat Stadium on a pleasantly-warm afternoon for team and individual shots, before retiring AHS’ indoor practice facility to give the media and fans an opportunity to ‘Meet the Bearcats.’
Aledo held its intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, and at the end of the coming week of practice will travel to Denton with a scrimmage against defending 4A, Division I champion Guyer.
Brock, whose JV and varsity teams scrimmaged against Anson last Friday, will hold its picture day event on Thursday morning.
The Eagles will host its second scrimmage the next day, taking the field at Brock Junior High to meet Red Oak Life. Brock’s regular-season opener will be at Dallas Episcopal on Aug. 30.
