Alvord top ‘dogs in Millsap’s opening tilt

Weatherford Democrat

MILLSAP — Take away the first 10 minutes of Alvord’s 31-7 win over Millsap Friday night and Maroon fans were treated to a pretty interesting ball game.

While not exactly jumping for joy over the season-opening setback, Millsap Coach Kyle Coker did see plenty of positives in the game  the squad can take with it.

“I was proud of the way we played throughout,” Coker said. “There was no quit, no give up in our kids, which you like to see.”

Millsap’s defense forced four fumbles, recovering two of them while playing turnover-free football.

Even though surrendering 349 yards to the visiting Bulldogs, Coker was proud of the squad’s execution.

“If we keep working hard, good things will happen,” Coker said.

Alvord hit the ground running, taking the opening kickoff back to the Millsap 7-yard line. Joe Randall had the first of his four scores two plays later and Alvord led 7-0, just  55 seconds into the ‘Dog fight.

The visitors scored on two of their next three drives to take a 21-0 lead late in the first. Millsap had had enough after seeing its offense go three-and-out on its first four offensive possessions.

Senior Michell Coker recovered a fumble at the Alvord 34, and a pair of Dylan Burton runs moved the ball to the visitor’s 14 which set up Jordan Richardson’s score, rambling around the left side for the touchdown as time expired to end the first quarter.

The TD would be as close as Millsap would get in the game. The Millsap defense bent but did not break throughout the second and third quarter, Tré Newby coming through with a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery defensively.

Burton and Andrew Tyson led the offense, coming through with 36 yards each on the ground.

Millsap will take to the road Friday, playing at Dublin in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
