Bearcats big-play the ‘Ville in rivalry romp

Weatherford Democrat

ALEDO — Any ideas the Stephenville Yellowjackets may have had about keeping the 2013 episode of their rivalry with Aledo close  were diminished shortly after the break on Friday night.

Already sporting a two-touchdown lead at halftime, the Bearcats turned on the offensive jets, scoring back-to-back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter, all on one-play drives, to create and maintain a sizeable gap over the ‘Jackets, winning the non-district contest, 56-14.

“Any time you’ve got a rivalry, it’s going to be intense and Stephenville is a good football team,” Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan said. “If it wasn’t for a few mistakes they made, it would’ve been a tighter ball game.”

After a slightly marred beginning, with each team committing a turnover, the Bearcats put the first points on the board, with a lone touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 72-yard connection from Luke bishop to John Whatley.

Following a drive that began in the first, Aledo scored to start the second when Bishop found another receiver, this time Ryan Newsome, for eight yards and a score.

The Bearcats would add another score before Stephenville ended its drought with an 11-yard scamper from quarterback Jarrett Stidham with four minutes to play before halftime.

Aledo’s passing game took over the night, with Bishop completing 10-of-16 attempts and four touchdowns.

“One of the things I think we need to improve on going forward is our running game,” Buchanan said. “We struggled in the first half.”

The Bearcats ended the night with 251 yards carried, led by junior Jess Anders, who had 12 rushes for 85 yards.

Following Aledo’s 21-point third quarter, the Bearcats scored yet again, with 10:17 in the fourth, on a 25-yard run by Daythan Davis.

Aledo had an opportunity a few minutes before when Newsome hooked up with Quanel Williams, but the potential score was called back after a block in the back foul.

The Yellowjackets would get their final score at the 8:13 mark on a Stidham-Brock Morrison connection, but it was the Bearcats who had the last say, adding seven more points on an Aaron Vidrine run, followed by a Chance Nevarez kick.
