Parker County trio sweeps into regional tournaments

— By GREG WEBB

Brock Lady Eagles

The Brock Lady Eagles’ straight-sets win over Godley (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) was merely the first success of three that area teams would enjoy, Tuesday night. The Class 2A, Region II quarterfinal victory over the Lady Cats has set up another trip to the regional tournament for Brock.

To be held at Rockwall High School, the Lady Eagles will meet Quitman in the semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lady Bulldogs dispatched Paris Chisum in three games on Tuesday. Brock head coach Keith Guyon coached the Quitman team before coming to Brock, adding another bit of spice to the matchup, as Brock aspires to defend its 2A title. The other Region II semifinal features Callisburg meeting Queen City. The region final is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.

Springtown Lady Porcupines

Springtown returns to the Class 3A, Region I tourney for a second-straight year after sweeping Iowa Park (25-19, 25-14, 25-23) at Bowie High School. The win reserves a regional semifinal slot for the Lady Porcupines, who will head west for The Coliseum in Snyder and meet up with Big Spring’s Lady Steers on Friday, in a 3 p.m. tilt. Big Spring survived a 3-2 match with Monahans to earn its semifinal bracket.

The other semifinal pits defending 3A champ Abilene Wylie against Liberty Hill. Although Springtown head coach Leighann Strickland and the Pojo girls will be concentrating their efforts on Big Spring, they may be pulling for another shot at the reigning state champions, who eliminated the Lady Porcupines last year in the regional tourney.

Aledo Ladycats

Last year’s five-set thriller in the Class 4A, Region I semifinal featured Aledo’s win over Amarillo. By virtue of the Ladycats’ hotly-contested (25-23, 25-16, 28-26) win over Top-10 ranked Burleson on Friday and Amarillo’s straight-set victory over Wolfforth Frenship, a rematch is in the offing at the regional tournament set for resolution at Abilene Christian University on Friday.

  • Fitting the pieces together

That coaches will move on, due to advancement of career, life changes or a myriad of other influences, is a given. Aledo is not immune to the turnover, but is year-in and year-out apt to experience very modest changes, due to another myriad of positive factors.

When asked what appealed to her most about the opportunity to compete at a high level, given all of the prospects of getting to travel to other athletic venues, meet other kids who have worked toward the same goals and/or walk away with medals draped around her neck, Mach I TC member Sadie Tharp’s answer was brief — and to the point.

“I just love the running,” Tharp said.
