Icy forecasts (may) spawn slate scurries

— By GREG WEBB

The gloom and doom local forecasts the various weather bureaus have predicted for the weekend has already had an effect on previously-scheduled events in the area. The Aledo vs. Wichita Falls Class 4A quarterfinal football tilt, originally set for Friday night, which would have put it squarely in the middle of the bad-weather predictions, was pulled up to Thursday night, with a 6 p.m. start, in hopes of getting the game in ahead of the nastiness. Other local playoff football has been rescheduled, as well, with the Ennis-Mesquite Poteet playoff also moved up to Thursday.

Football playoffs are not the only upcoming prep events with scheduling concerns, as basketball is in full swing. In fact, Aledo Ladycats began their district schedule on Tuesday, (and didn’t hurt their No. 2 TABC ranking a bit, more than doubling up Arlington Heights, 68-30).

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were very few changes from Parker County schools, with most ISDs taking a “wait-n-see” approach. The winter storm watch for the area was upgraded to a winter-storm warning late Wednesday, and was predicted to move into the area Thursday evening, with freezing temperatures coming to bear around midnight.

Local basketball tournaments in the area are the most likely to experience changes and/or cancellations. The Kangaroo Klassic is slated for bracket play Thursday through Saturday, with host Weatherford and the Aledo varsity joining the mix. The Aledo girls are also set to play in Brock’s Showcase Invitational.

Other local teams are slated to play in more remote venues. It is not yet determined if their travel plans are going to change. Parents and fans are urged to check with the schools’ respective websites or call the administrative offices for event changes.
