Area-state high school football results - Sept. 22, 2013

Brock spoils Chico’s home opener with 54-0 pounding

Staff Report

Brock’s Slaten Gough set the wholly one-sided tone very early on Friday with a 44-yard sprint to the end zone to open a night of scoring by the high-flying Eagles.. The senior would add three more touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving from QB Seth Boleman) during the Eagles’ 54-0 pasting of the Chico Dragons.

Leading 33-0 at the half, the defense and special teams got into the scoring mix, as well, as Brock improved to 3-1 on the season. The loss was the first for Chico, who came into the contest 3-0 and ranked top-20 in Class 1A.

Kolbin Mills and Tyler Gray also had rushing TDs for Brock, who will again be on the road Friday to face the Winters Blizzards in a 7:30 p.m. match.

Contest gets away from Porcupines in fourth quarter vs. Gainesville

Staff Report

Six turnovers torpedoed Springtown’s bid to follow up last week’s non-district win with another one on Friday, as Gainesville put up 21 unanswered points to pull away from Pojo en route to a 41-18 win.

In total offense, visiting Springtown topped the Leopards by nearly 100 yards, with running back Ryan Snow rushing for 111 yards, but the rude drive interruptions of four interceptions and two lost fumbles destroyed the Porcupines offensive continuity. Two of the turnovers resulted in defensive TDs for Gainesville.

Life will not get any easier for Pojo this week, as it will host red-hot Graham on Friday. Springtown will look to home cooking and Homecoming as intangibles for an edge against the Steers on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
