ALEDO — Texas football history was made Friday night on the field of Aledo’s Bearcat Stadium, thanks to the leg of Bearcat kicker Chance Nevarez.

Nine minutes into the third quarter of the Aledo-South Hills slaughter that saw the Bearcats engineer a 77-16 win, the senior booted his 115th consecutive point-after through the uprights to set the new record. Thanks to a couple more Aledo touchdowns, Nevarez also made two more extra point kicks, setting the new bar at 117 in a row.

“I started watching him when he was in seventh grade as a B-team kicker. After watching for a little bit, I realized he was no B-team kicker,” Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan said. “We tried to stay away from talking about it the last few weeks, but we wanted to get it at home and we did that.”

The Bearcat offense gave Nevarez plenty of chances for the record, putting up 77 points and a total of 748 yards, the second week in a row to score at least 70 against an opponent after beating Arlington Heights, 84-7, the week before. Friday night, the Bearcats scored on every single drive of the game, with the exception of one in the first quarter that resulted in a turnover.

“Any time you’re team plays like they’re supposed to, you feel like a good coach,” Buchanan said.

The Bearcats distributed the scoring evenly. With touchdown runs by Jess Anders and Daythan Davis, and passes from Ryan Newsome and Luke Bishop to Anders, Taco Anderson and Toby Gray, Aledo took a commanding 49-6 lead at halftime.

The Bearcats scored 42 points to begin the game before the Scorpions got on the board, with Tracin Wallace’s 38-yard completion to Tylan Wallace. The freshman quarterback would finish the night with 65 yards rushing, the team-high, and 186 yards passing.

Despite seeing some new faces on the field in the second half for Aledo, the Bearcats just kept on coming, with Aaron Vidrine scoring on a 2-yard run and Isaiah Mallory finding the end zone on a 7-yard scamper. Parker Shaunfield came in to kick the final extra point for the Bearcats, giving Nevarez’s leg a rest.

“We’ve got a lot of depth, especially at the skilled positions,” Buchanan said. “Our second line is as good as some of these other teams’ first lines.”

With the win, the Bearcats remain undefeated, with a 2-0 district record and 5-0 overall.
