Roos take on Ennis in ‘live-ly’ scrimmage

— Staff Report

To close out a night of scrimmaging that included the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams on Friday at Ennis, the conclusion offered up some ‘live’ action for the attending crowd, marking a departure from the normally structured offense-defense method of providing reps for the players.

The Weatherford Kangaroos and Ennis Lions assimilated “live-game” mode for the final 18 minutes of their pre-season preparation, after the frosh and JV teams had done their thing for the previous two hours.

The Kangaroo defense produced a first set of downs stop of the Ennis offense’s first possession to begin the real-game play.

On the ensuing possession, the Roos marched downfield, recording four consecutive first downs to draw first blood.

Although not scoring in subsequent possessions and forcing punts, the Weatherford offense continued to move the ball, never being held to a three-and-out stymie.

Ennis managed two answering scores while the teams were on the clock, with WHS taking the ball on their final possession and driving deep into the Lions’ end of the field before time ran out.

Ennis, a very athletic team picked to finish near the top of District 15-4A in a talented alignment of squads including Lancaster and Red Oak, provided a good test for the Roos.

Weatherford opens its regular season on Friday, in a non-district contest against Richland at Birdville’s FA/AC.
