Gathering at Roo Stadium ramps up fervor for new seasons

Event provides venue for recognizing fall athletic teams, cheerleaders ... the whole band of Roos

— By GREG WEBB

A Thursday evening of music, dance routines and spirited speakers provided the backdrop for a celebratory event to kick off the fall semester for the kids, coaches, directors and — well, darn near everyone who will be shaping the sphere of extracurricular activities around Weatherford High School in the next four months.

Parents and other local folks who comprise the Kangaroo fan base were on hand to share in the festivities, emceed by WISD’s Executive Athletic Director Richard Scoggin. Before the night was through, virtually any student who will be actively contributing to the fall athletic-centric activities was recognized.

This night was not just about the football team, as all of the teams who spent part of their summer tuning up for the 2013 fall athletic endeavors were recognized. The WHS girls who make up the Lady Roos varsity volleyball squad, along with head coach Natalie Gonzales, came over from Roo gymnasium  to join the affair, after their non-district match with Abilene Wylie.

Also trotted out for recognition were the Roo fall tennis and golf teams, as well as the cross-country teams.

Attendees were treated to performances from the Kangaroo marching band, replete with dance routines by the Blue Belles and the Roo Color Guard.

Scoggin drove the pace of the proceedings, which included the Roo fight song and the varsity cheerleading squad to pick up the incite the excitement of the crowd.

For many in attendance, the event offered a first glance at Weatherford head football coach Weldon Nelms, and the Roo coaching staff, As the keynote speaker for the night, Coach Nelms did not disappoint.

Going ‘around the horn’ to offer appreciation and encouragement to all of the fall athletic teams, band and all other groups honored at the Thursday-night soiree, Nelms then turned his attention to the attending parents and other fans, exalting their support as the foundation for all of the Roo endeavors. Nelms’ spirited presentation brought the fans and students to a fevered pitch, adding another degree of anticipation to the start of the respective athletic seasons.

The 2013 Roo football team and trainers were then introduced, marking the conclusion to the honoring of the varsity athletes.

Scoggin brought the seniors to the center of the turf for the playing and singing of the Weatherford school song, which brought the successful event to a fitting conclusion.
