Goings reaches ‘500’ milestone

— By Greg Webb

In the course of sweeping through most of the competition at the Northwest Classic Invitational Volleyball Tournament recently, Aledo’s varsity celebrated more than just another tourney win.

Kathy Goings, the Aledo head volleyball coach who is entering her 18th season at the helm of the Ladycats program, notched career victory No. 500 during Saturday play at the tournament. Aledo has been the beneficiary of every one of the Goings-led wins.

“All of my wins have come [while at] Aledo,” Goings said. This was my first head coaching job.

“Here at Aledo I have been blessed with 10 district Championships, four co-district championships, two runners up and one third-place finish.”

Before coming to Aledo, Goings spent 10 years at Grapevine, beginning her tenure as the middle school coach (five years) and another handful of years coaching the Lady Mustangs at the JV level.

Aledo gave Goings her first varsity assignment in 1996, and it has been a successful partnership for the past 17 years, with the Ladycats reaching postseason play every one of those years.

The playoff runs have seen two bi-district appearances, an area advance and a trip to the regional quarterfinals, but most runs have been deeper. Goings has led the Ladycats to eight regional semifinals and three region finals. Aledo has also reached a state semifinal match and last season it played for the state title in the finals.

The 500 victories calculate to more than 29 victories in each of Goings’ 17 seasons.

The Ladycats took the silver-bracket championship at the Northwest tourney and  at press time on Saturday, had won four of its first five matches in the Leander Volleypalooza at College Station.

The Ladycats are at home for two non-district matches this week, hosting Burleson on Tuesday and Cleburne on Friday. Both games are 6:30 p.m. starts.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
