Completing its non-district schedule on Tuesday with a win over host Springtown, Ladycats head coach Kathy Goings thinks the Aledo varsity still has room for improvement, but does not doubt the group’s resolve.
“The girls have already set their goal to be undefeated in [District 7-4A],” Goings said, “and, even though they still have room to grow, I know they will come out fighting hard.
“We open with Granbury, who will be very tough this year, but I would never sell these [Aledo} girls short. They are real competitors and love to win.”
Aledo set the stage for its district opener with a straight-set performance against Springtown, winning 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. The Lady Porcupines scrapped gamely at the conclusion in each of the three sets, but failed to equalize the Ladycats hitters.
Finishing its pre-district slate with a 22-6 record, Aledo will host the district opener against the Lady Pirates on Friday, with a 5:30 p.m. start.
Springtown head coach Leighann Strickland was a bit dismayed why the Lady Porcupines seemed disjointed in the match, but found some solace in that it was a rarity thus far in the season.
“We just seemed to be hit-n-miss all night and never really all got on the same page,” Strickland said of the Lady Porcupines play. “I really think it was just our turn to have ‘one of those night.’ I believe we had 37 blocking errors, which is never good.
“But, we really have not had one of these type matches all season, thank goodness, so I’ll take that.”
Springtown had its bright spots, with senior co-captain Shelbi Meek knocking down 11 kills, with as many assists. Meek’s co-captain counterpart, senior Ashley Mainord, had 12 digs.
Springtown will wait a little longer for its District 6-3A opener, slated for Sept. 27 at Fort Worth’s Diamond Hill-Jarvis, but will resume the pre-district slate against another tough opponent on Friday, playing host to Class 2A defending state champ Brock on Friday, 5 p.m.
Strickland is happy to be playing teams the calibre of Aledo and Brock, hoping the competition will pay dividends in the district schedule, as well as the postseason.
