Area basketball recaps

WEATHERFORD —

Roos put mark in win column

The Weatherford boys’ varsity basketball team recorded their first “W” on Friday, beating Fort Worth South Hills, 37-36.

The Roos were led by Tony Rodriguez with 12 points, and Lawson Priess with 10. Ryan Merrill controlled the boards with 13 rebounds on the evening, while Austin Little contributed with an impressive defensive performance.

Lady Roos off to good start

The lady Roos improved to 3-0 on the young season last week with a 66-54 win over Boswell on Tuesday. Sparked by Alexis Garner in the final minute and a half of the third period, the Lady Roos cruised to the win in the final quarter.

Abbye Shearmire, Lou Hawkins, Remi Reynolds, and Garner all finished the game in double figures, and the WHS pressure defense forced Boswell into 31 turnovers.

The Lady Roos went 2-2 over the weekend at the Northwest Tournament in Justin, bouncing back to a 55-48 win over Prosper after losing a close game to Byron Nelson to start the tourney. Falling short to a talented South Grand Prairie team on Friday, the Lady Roos again bounced back, topping the tournament hosts on Saturday by a 58-34 count. Faith Woodring led the effort for the Lady Roos on Saturday, scoring 20 points.

Monarchs kick off season with win

Poolville’s varsity boys got their season rolling last week   with a 78-52 victory over the Midway Falcons. The Monarchs jumped out to 23-4 first quarter lead thanks to steady 3-point shooting and stellar defense.

Poolville was led in scoring by Colton Jack with 18, including four 3-pointers, and  Jonathan Arbuckle, who  scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds.  Tanner Dobbs was active, scoring 14 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing to teammates for five assists and five blocks.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
