Area seniors honored as regular seasons conclude

Weatherford’s largest crowd of the season gathered at Roo gymnasium for at least a couple of reasons on Tuesday. The Lady Roos were vying for its first postseason slot in several years, guaranteed with a win over North Crowley, whom they hosted in the District 3-5A finale. The fans also turned out to honor its seniors, making their last appearance in front of the home crowd.

And though the Weatherford girls made a great early run at upending the Lady Panthers, fortunes turned in the second half as North Crowley made a comeback. But help came from Arlington, as Martin’s Lady Warriors topped Lamar, granting the district’s fourth seed to the Lady Roos.

Weatherford’s five seniors and the rest of the Lady Roos will aspire to extend their postseason on Monday, as they meet the Southlake Carroll Lady Dragons in a Class 5A, Region I playoff game at Nolan Catholic High School. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.

Aledo recognized its four varsity seniors and parents on Friday, completing the celebration with the first of two crucial wins the Ladycats needed to secure the district title. After beating Granbury on Friday, Aledo took care of business at Fort Worth’s Billingsley Fieldhouse on Tuesday, topping Trimble Tech, who had laid a loss on Aledo earlier in the district season.

With the District 7-4A crown in hand, the Aledo girls, ranked in the Top 20 by the state’s coaches poll, will face either Burleson or Crowley on Monday, at Mansfield Legacy High School. Game time is 7 p.m.

Brock also has four seniors gracing its girls’ varsity roster. The foursome was honored last Friday before its final district match against Boyd. The Lady Eagles won the contest going away, clinching yet another undefeated district season, and with it, the District 9-2A title.
