Brock begins, Aledo continues state playoff play on Thursday

Staff Report

The Lady Eagles’ wait for an opponent is over. Brock will begin defense of its Class 2A basketball state title on Thursday, taking the court against Sunnyvale. The Lady Raiders advanced to the Region II Area round with a 63-36 win over Callisburg on Monday.

Brock, undefeated in District 9-2A play, enters the playoffs vying for its fifth-straight state title. The Lady Eagles meet Sunnyvale at Fort Worth’s Nolan Catholic High School Thursday at 7 p.m.

Aledo had little trouble advancing to the Class 4A, Region I Area round on Monday, shooting ahead of Burleson in the first quarter and giving its starters a good rest in the final period.

The Ladycats will be the visiting team on Thursday, with the playoff venue set at Chisholm Trail High School, located at 3100 Northwest College Drive in Fort Worth, close to the Northwest Campus of Tarrant County College. Aledo will play the Saginaw Lady Rough Riders, the runners-up from District 6-4A, who eliminated Byron Nelson on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.

NASCAR season arrives with a buzz

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — There’s a buzz about NASCAR and the season-opening Daytona 500 that has nothing to do with an exploding jet dryer or a well-timed tweet from a driver.

The new Gen-6 race car makes its long-awaited debut at Daytona International Speedway, and the success of the 2013 season could depend heavily on its performance. Already, things look good. After all, NASCAR’s most popular driver has given the Gen-6 a ringing endorsement.

“This sport is going to be revolutionized again with this car,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said after one of his first full test sessions in the car.

That’s the shot in the arm NASCAR is looking for after a 2012 season that saw the quality of the racing criticized at times. Long green-flag runs and a lack of cautions frustrated fans, and that irritated drivers who openly wondered if fans were more interested in wrecking than they were in racing.
